Few people can rival the expertise of a professional restaurant critic when it comes to identifying the best cuisine local and gourmet quality culinary establishments have to offer their patrons. Anne Hillerman draws upon her many years of experience and expertise as a restaurant critic to compile superb recipes from a wide range of renowned restaurants in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in "Santa Fe Flavors: Best Restaurants And Recipes". Each feature dish is thoroughly 'kitchen cook friendly' in preparation and range from Beer-Battered Chile Rellenos (Santa Fe Bar and Grill); to Atole Pinon Hotcakes (Tecolote Cafe); to Basil Ice Cream (Blue Heron at Sunrise Springs); to Shrimp Veracruz (Mariscos Costa Azul). For gourmet quality meals that will please any palate and satisfy any appetite, "Santa Fe Flavors" is a highly recommended addition to personal, family, and community library cookbook collections!

This is a wonderful collection of some of the best resipes from Sante Fe, NM restaurants written by one of my favorite foodies. This is not just another litany of green chile dishes, but a literary tour of the culinary side of Santa Fe. I reccomend you enjoy it with a lovely bottle of wine.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious foods, and the restaurants that make them   February 15, 2010
Robert C. Ross (New Jersey)
Anne Hillerman has lived, written and eaten in Santa Fe for many years, and this book collects reviews of her favorite 50 restaurants and some of their best dishes. She favors restaurants that offer good food, consistency, a pleasant environment and a good overall experience.

Sample recipe (each contributed by a different reviewed restaurant):

Chile-Mint Agridulce from La Boca restaurant
12 cup lemon juice
12 cup honey
14 cup chopped mint
3 tablespoons chile pequín flakes
1 teaspoon minced garlic
In a small bowl, combine all ingredients. Serve with lamb chops or other meat
or fish as desired. Makes one cup.

"National Geographic" recently included Santa Fe Flavors: Best Restaurants and Recipes in its list of recommended reading about Santa Fe. Their lineup includes:

The Spell of New Mexico edited by Tony Hillerman (1984)

In this collection of essays, the writers and thinkers who were once drawn to New Mexico reveal its allure. D.H. Lawrence, Mary Austin, and Conrad Richter are some of the writers featured. "Pretentious as it sounds, and tough as it is to prove, there does seem to be something about New Mexico which not only attracts creative people but stimulates their creativity," Hillerman writes.

Santa Fe: A Walk Through Time by Kingsley Hammett (2004)

Written by Kingsley Hammett, publisher of DESIGNER/Builder magazine, this book of essays and photographs focuses on the original 67 buildings of downtown Santa Fe and the people who inhabited them.

Santa Fe Flavors: Best Restaurants and Recipes (2009)

Restaurant critic Anne Hillerman not only recommends Santa Fe eateries here, but she includes the recipes of some of the city's most cherished dishes, such as lobster salad from the Pink Adobe and aguacate (avocado) from El Farol.

Hillerman's book also won the 2009 New Mexico Book Award for best cookbook of 2009.

Hillerman has chosen some of our favorite Santa Fe restaurants and has encouraged us to try a few new to us. The recipes are all very simple to make -- the sample above is a fair example -- at least for an intermediate cook like myself. Of course, they work a little differently when I'm in New Jersey at 600 feet above sea level, than they do several thousand feet higher when I'm in Santa Fe. That's just part of the fun of this excellent guide to dining and cooking the Santa Fe way.

5 out of 5 stars My take on Santa Fe restaurants and recipes   March 16, 2009

I wrote this guide based on my long and happy years as restaurant reviewer for Northern New Mexico with Journal Santa Fe. The restaurants included, my personal favorites, serve a variety of cuisine, all of it delicious. Each restaurant I invited to participate provided its own special recipe, and the results range from soup to desserts. Hope you enjoy it. Author Anne Hillerman
